Caribe Gyn's 2025 panel of invited experts in the field of Gynecology and Obstetrics to be part of the Scientific Program 

Zaskia Rodriguez Gonzalez, MD, FACOG

Dr. Zaskia Rodríguez hails from the town of Arecibo, where she completed her early university studies in Natural Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico. She then moved to the Río Piedras campus to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Biology. She pursued postgraduate studies in Medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara and returned to her island to complete her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Municipal Hospital of San Juan from 2011 to 2015. Dr. Rodríguez then relocated to Ponce, where she began practicing her profession and later established her private office in the town. She is certified by the American Academy ofetrics and Gynecology and is board certified in her specialty. Additionally, she serves as a faculty member at the Ponce School of Medicine and is part of the faculty for the Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at San Hospital in Ponce. Currently, she is the President of Caribe-Gyn.

JUAN CARLOS ORENGO, MD, MPH, PHD 

Dr. Juan Carlos Orengo Valverde is a Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the Laboratory of Biodiversity, Ecology, Evolution, and Vector-Borne Diseases at Ponce Health Sciences University. He earned his MD from the University of Navarra in Spain and his MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Puerto Rico. Dr. Orengo holds dual PhDs from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, specializing in research methodology and mathematical modeling in medicine. He has completed advanced training in social marketing, patient-centered comparative effectiveness research, and international health through programs with the CDC, PAHO, and WHO. His work focuses on public health, epidemiology, and control of vector-borne diseases.

EDUARDO F. ESTRELLA ARTEAGA, MD, FACOG 

Dr. Eduardo Estrella, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, attended Colegio La Piedad in Isla Verde and earned a BS in Biology Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in 1994. He received his MD from the University of Puerto Rico Medical School in 1998. Dr. Estrella completed his OBGYN residency at San Juan City Hospital in 2002, serving as Chief Resident from 2001 to 2002, and began private practice at Ashford Presbyterian Community Hospital and Hospital Auxilio Mutuo. From 2005 to 2009, he returned to San Juan City Hospital as part of the residency program. In 2012, Dr. Estrella moved to Georgia, joining Wellstar Cobb’s gynecology private practice and becoming a certified Da Vinci Robotic provider. Since 2015, he has practiced at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he has held multiple leadership roles, including Associate Program Director of the OBGYN Residency Program (2015–present), Department Chair (2018–2022), and Chief Quality Medical Officer (2022–2024). He currently serves as Chief Quality Medical Officer for Women’s Services at Wellstar Medical Group. In 2024, he was appointed an ABOG Oral Board Examiner and a Peer Reviewer for the Georgia Composite Medical Board. His professional interests include quality and safety, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS), robotics, teaching, mentoring, and ultrasound.

NURIA B. LUNA RAMIREZ, MD, MS, FACOG 

Dr. Nuria B. Luna Ramirez is a board-certified Obstetrician Gynecologist and fellowship trained specialist in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, followed by an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Luna subsequently completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. She holds a Master of Science in Clinical Research from the University of Arizona and currently serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus. As founder and director of Luna Gynecology, Dr. Luna provides specialized surgical care focusing on complex gynecologic conditions. She maintains an active role in clinical research, medical education, and global health initiatives aimed at advancing women’s healthcare.

DANIEL SANABRIA SERRANO, MD 

Gynecologic Oncologist at Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, Colombia. Dr. Sanabria is a Surgeon, Obstetrician-Gynecologist, and Gynecologic Oncologist trained at the Fundación Universitaria de Ciencias de la Salud (FUCS), with a Clinical Epidemiology degree from UNAB. He serves as Associate Professor in Gynecologic Oncology and Endoscopic Surgery at FUCS, and in OB/GYN at both FUCS and Universidad El Bosque. He is the General Coordinator of the Ovarian Cancer Clinical Care Center at FSFB, a founding partner of Endomed Colombia, and director of surgical training courses for DARE & MAKE. An expert in robotic and minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Sanabria has authored over 30 indexed publications, books, and textbook chapters in his field, and serves as a national and international advisor for pharmaceutical industry projects.

JOSÉ R. CRUZ DÍAZ, MD, FACOG 

Dr. Cruz graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico in 1993. He completed his training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Hospital for Adults and finished a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He has been an assistant professor at the School of Medicine at the Medical Sciences Campus since 1999 and has served as the Medical Director and Laboratory Director of the HIMA-San Pablo Fertility Clinic in Caguas since 2006.

FRANCES VÉLEZ BARTOLOMÉ, MD

Dr. Frances Vélez Bartolomei is a board-certified medical and biochemical geneticist and pediatrician. She currently serves as Assistant Professor and Interim Chief of the Medical Genetics Section in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, where she leads the island’s largest pediatric genetics program based at the University Pediatric Hospital in San Juan. She earned her MD from Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, completed her pediatrics residency at the University Pediatric Hospital in San Juan, and pursued dual fellowships in Medical Genetics and Biochemical Genetics at Stanford University. Dr. Vélez specializes in genetic and metabolic disorders, including inborn errors of metabolism, chromosomal syndromes, and neurodevelopmental conditions. She is the leading provider of advanced gene therapies in Puerto Rico for conditions such as spinal muscular atrophy, acid sphingomyelinase deficiency, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. She is deeply committed to equitable access to genetic services across the island and the U.S. Virgin Islands, offering outreach clinics in underserved areas such as Caguas, Ponce, and St. Thomas. In addition to her clinical work, she actively participates in research and medical education, focusing on the genetic health of Hispanic and Puerto Rican populations.

PEDRO F. ESCOBAR RODRÍGUEZ, MD, FACOG, FACS

Dr. Pedro Escobar is a distinguished figure in gynecologic oncology with a focus on advanced minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery. He has held leadership positions at prominent institutions, including serving as the Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Women’s Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. His expertise in robotic surgery has been instrumental in improving outcomes for patients with gynecologic cancers, allowing for faster recovery times and fewer complications. Dr. Escobar is also recognized for his contributions to clinical research. He has authored and co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, a surgical atlas, and book chapters on gynecologic cancer treatment, surgical techniques, and innovations in oncology. He is currently an Associate Professor at Ponce Health Sciences University and the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine. His work has advanced the understanding of cancer biology and therapeutic strategies, earning him recognition in both national and international conferences.

JOAQUIN LABOY, MD, FACOG 

Dr. Joaquín Laboy is a retired obstetrician-gynecologist and former Program Director of the OB/GYN Residency at Hospital Episcopal San Lucas in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He currently collaborates with the Ponce Health Sciences University School of Medicine and serves on the Scientific Committee of Caribe Gyn, contributing his extensive academic and clinical experience in medical education.

ALFRED ABUHAMAD, MD

Dr. Abuhamad currently serves as Mason C. Andrews Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Radiology, Dean, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Executive Vice President, Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. Dr. Abuhamad is a past President, Provost & Dean of Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Abuhamad had served as past President of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education (SUSME), Perinatal Quality Forum (PQF), and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). He is also the founder and past Chair of the Council for Patient Safety in Women’s Health Care, in Washington DC. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, authored eight textbooks in fetal echocardiography, ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, first trimester ultrasound and office procedures, and received numerous national and international awards, including the 2019 Commonwealth of Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award and the 2022 Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Life-Time Achievement Award. He is the recipient of the National Institute of Health RO1 grant to study “Novel Tools for the Noninvasive Evaluation of the Human Placenta”. Dr. Abuhamad established the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology’s (ISUOG) outreach program , and has led several ultrasound training missions to the developing world to include Haiti, Ghana, and Somaliland. He is well known internationally for his work in ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, fetal echocardiography, global outreach, and patient safety. Dr. Abuhamad has been a faculty member at EVMS, at ODU, and a citizen of Southeastern Virginia for 32 years.

SARA I. DÍAZ VALENTÍN, MD, MSC, FACOG, URPS

Dr. Diaz is dual board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) and Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS). Dr. Diaz completed her undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of Puerto Rico, graduated Magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s in general sciences in 1996, graduated with honors from medical school in 2000, and completed an OBGYN residency at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Center in 2004. In 2009, she completed her FPMRS Fellowship and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Research from the Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition to her Urogynecology training, she completed postgraduate training in pelvic floor neurophysiology. Dr. Diaz joined the faculty at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, in 2009 as Assistant Professor, Division Director, and Program Director of the Urogynecology Fellowship. She has held numerous leadership positions throughout her career, served on several national committees with the American College of OBGYN, presented research projects at multiple international meetings, and lectured and proctored at the national level on advanced laparoscopic robotic surgery techniques. In addition, she founded and held the position of CEO of Puerto Rico Rise Up, a non-profit organization that helped the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico from 2017 to 2019. She continues to chair the organization’s board of directors.

DIEGO HERNÁNDEZ-ARANDA, MD

Dr. Hernández is a board-certified obstetrician gynecologist and urogynecologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he serves as Assistant Professor in the Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. He completed his residency at St. Francis Hospital and a fellowship at the University of Rochester. His clinical and research interests include pelvic organ prolapse and minimally invasive surgery, and adjuvant pain management in outpatient procedures. Dr. Hernández-Aranda has presented his work at the American Urogynecology Society (AUGS) and the International Urogynecologic Association (IUGA), published in the Official Journal of the American Urogynecologic Society, and is actively involved in clinical trials and resident and fellow education.

Giancarlo Mari, MD, MBA, FACOG, FAIUM, FAGOS

Mari joined the University Hospitals Department of Obstetrics &  Gynecology, in the Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) in May. Dr. Mari is an accomplished physician-scientist with international renown in the fields of fetal diagnosis and intervention, and the former Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Tennessee. In his position overseeing ultrasound and fetal therapy, Ruhlman Family Chair in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UH. Dr. Mari will be leading the growth of University Hospital’s expanding fetal care program along with Ellie Ragsdale, MD, and Mae-Lan Winchester, MD. He is internationally known for his work developing Doppler ultrasonography for the non-invasive diagnosis of fetal anemia, and for the use of Doppler velocimetry of the fetal middle cerebral artery for diagnosis and management of growth-restricted fetuses. He has been a pioneer of interventional fetal therapy for the treatment of twin-twin-transfusion syndrome. Mari has been the co-founder of three fetal therapy centers in the United States. He has trained several hundred ob/gyn residents and medical students, 30 clinical fellows, and 30 research fellows. During his 10 years as MFM Fellowship Director and Chair at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, he collaborated closely with the Fetal Center of Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

JIMMY JULIA, MD, FACOG, FACS 

Dr. Julia-Martinez is a board-certified urogynecologist with over 25 years of experience in women’s pelvic health. He earned his medical degree from Ponce Health Sciences University and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Staten Island University Hospital, affiliated with the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Julia specializes in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, with a clinical focus on the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, atrophic vaginitis, and other complex pelvic floor disorders. He currently practices at Caribbean Urogynecology Associates in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, where he is committed to advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques and improving women’s quality of life through individualized, compassionate care.

ANNA DI MARCO, MD

Born and raised in Ponce, of Italian descent, her calling for oncology was born during her time in Italy, where she worked as a volunteer with cancer patients. A graduate of the Universidad Iberoamericana in Santo Domingo, she earned her medical degree with honors. She completed her specialty in internal medicine at the Hospital de Damas in Ponce. She completed two years of research in oncology and three years of sub-specialty training in hematology and oncology at the San Juan Veterans Hospital. Among her accomplishments, she stood out for her work in the Breast Cancer Clinics at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. There, she also earned certification in Bone Marrow Transplantation. Dr. Di Marco is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Oncology.

MIREILY RIVERA ROSADO, MD, FACOG 

Dr. Rivera-Rosado is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist with over 13 years of experience in private practice. She earned her medical degree from Universidad Central del Caribe and completed her residency at The University of Puerto Rico Medical Science Campus School of Medicine. Dr. Rivera-Rosado is also a member of the International Society of Cosmetogynecology is being recognized globally as the best aesthetic results in the labiaplasty category. Dr. Rivera-Rosado is dedicated to building strong patient-doctor relationships, with a special interest in cosmetic, functional, and regenerative gynecology.

WILNELYA MORALES ROSADO, MD

Dr. Morales Rosado is a Board-certified psychiatrist from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with a private practice in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. She also serves as a Psychiatric Consultant for the Intellectual Disability Section of the Puerto Rico Department of Health. Her clinical work focuses on the treatment of trauma, depression, and anxiety, with a firm commitment to supporting neurodiverse populations and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in medical settings, in addition to consulting in labor and occupational management. She is dedicated to educating her patients, the community, and her colleagues through journals, newspapers, and as a speaker at the Health Institute of Puerto Rico.

JOSE A. ROMAN, MD, FACC 

Dr. José A. Román Ramos is a board-certified Clinical and Invasive Cardiologist based in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine. Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Adult Echocardiography. Originally from Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, Dr. Roman completed his undergraduate studies in General Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. He began his medical education at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico, and earned his medical degree from San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Dr. Jose A. Román is the founder and practicing cardiologist at CardioCaribe, a cardiovascular care clinic in Ponce. He also serves patients at Centro Médico Episcopal San Lucas, where he is an integral part of the hospital’s cardiovascular team.

DANIEL E. VELÁZQUEZ RIVERA, MD, MPD, MSC 

Dr. Daniel E. Velázquez Rivera is a dedicated and highly experienced Medical Doctor specializing in primary care and general practice. He serves as an Adjunct Professor of Medicine and is the President of Kheiron Group, a company focused on medical education and healthcare innovation. Dr. Velázquez holds a Medical Degree (MD), a Master of Public Health (MPH), and a Master of Science (MSc) in a related field. He is affiliated with Ashford Presbyterian Community Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
